One Day Short Courses
Norwich Union Risk Services offers a range of specifically developed short courses designed to keep you up to date with the key health and safety issues affecting your organisation. These courses are designed to cover the issues that are relevant to you.
Getting Started
The aim of this course is to provide delegates with the basic principles that small to medium sized businesses should follow to ensure compliance with legal requirements for health and safety.
On completion of the course delegates should be able to:
- Write a safety policy
- Identify the main sources of guidance and information
- Identify the main steps involved in Risk Assessment (and other specific risk assessments)
- Identify the main requirements for fire safety, welfare, first aid and employers liability cover, RIDDOR
Driver and Fleet Safety
The aim of the course is to equip delegates with the knowledge and tools required to ensure safe and effective management of vehicle fleets.
On completion of the course delegates should be able to:
- Identify the main hazards associated with occupational driving
- Identify the main steps to assessing occupational road risk
- Identify controls associated with the driver, journey and vehicle
Risk Assessment/Fire Risk Assessment
This one day course aims to provide delegates with an overview of the general risk assessment process and how its plays a part in the successful management of health and safety at work. Whilst the first part of the course will look at the general requirements of risk assessment, the second part will specifically focus on the requirements of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order and the need for fire risk assessments. At the end of the course, delegates will be able to complete fire risk assessments, considering a range of fire hazards, precautions and management systems.
Business Continuity
The aim of the course is to provide delegates with an appreciation of the key principles of business continuity planning and the implementation and testing of business continuity arrangements. On completion of the course delegates should be able to understand the commercial and quality drivers which:
- Support the need for Business Continuity within their organisation
- Determine the pattern of risk unique to their organisation
- Make cost/benefit analysis to support the need for a Business Continuity capability
- Identify the key components of a Business Continuity programme and the need for testing and maintenance
- Determine the factors required to implement the plan.
Managing Insurance Claims
The number of personal injury claims and the resulting costs continue to spiral. It has therefore never been more important to ensure that the liability claims process is properly managed and this course is designed to help you achieve this in your company.
Manual Handling Awareness
Musculoskeletal problems are still causing over a third of all days lost from work in the UK and many of these problems result from poor manual handling practises at work. This course covers anatomy, good lifting practise, team lifting and awkward loads and manual handling control measures.
Workplace Transport
Vehicle movements in the workplace are particularly hazardous; whether they are delivery vehicles, lorries, cars or fork lifts trucks. This course will help you to ensure that vehicle movements are carried out safely at your premises by covering vehicle hazards, separation of vehicles and pedestrians, traffic routes, maintenance and inspection of vehicles and driver training and controls.
CoSHH
The aim of the course is to provide delegates with an appreciation of the latest guidance and legislation on the control of hazardous substances in the workplace.
On completion of the course delegates should be able to:
- Identify the main changes introduced in the 2005 regulations
- Identify the main requirements of the regulations
- Identify the CoSHH control hierarchy
- Identify personal and environmental monitoring
- Identify ways in which awareness can be raised
- Outline the main requirements of LEV systems and PPE
Behavioural Safety
Attitudes to safety can vary but it is known that a poor attitude to safety can impact on decision making and behaviour. This course looks at the simple steps that can be taken to minimise the potential for accidents by promoting positive behaviours.
HSE Update
This course has been designed to allow delegates to interpret and explore current changes in health and safety and environmental legislation. A mix of presentations and group discussions will be used to determine the overall impact of new and proposed legislation. Discussions on the practical requirements of the new law will be included throughout the day.

Health and Safety for Property Owners
Owning property brings with it the need to manage specific health and safety risks. This one day course looks at the range of health and safety hazards that property owners should be aware of and understand. Adopting a modular format the course will look in detail at hazards such as Asbestos, Fire and the Control of Contractors and recommend cost effective, sensible and practical solutions.
IOSH Permit to Work
This course covers the legislation concerned with the safety of workers carrying out tasks in potentially dangerous conditions and how to devise and implement a permit to work system. Support material, including a comprehensive permit to work audit system, will be provided to assist delegates with the implementation of what they have learnt when they return to their functions.
