The Work at Height Regulations 2005

When we think of 'working at height' it tends to conjure up images of construction workers balancing precariously hundreds of feet above the ground.

It follows then that some employers may have happily ignored the introduction of new Work at Height Regulations, introduced from April 6 2005, believing that the rules do not apply to them.

This could not be further from the truth however, particularly as 'work at height' could mean working anywhere, even at or below ground level, according to the regulations. In fact, these rules apply wherever there is a risk of a fall - meaning that the regulations affect all employers.

In this feature, Norwich Union Risk Services consultant Andrew Couch provides an overview of the regulations, describing in more detail what is meant by 'work at height', who the rules apply to and what must be done in order to comply.

Part one - Preventing death and injury from falls

Part two - 'Height' and dutyholders' responsibilities

Part three - Selection and use of equipment

Part four - Inspections, fragile surfaces and falling objects
