Director jailed following death of worker
A construction firm director has been jailed for a year after the death of a builder who fell more than 3.5 metres after stumbling through a skylight opening.
Wu Zhu Weng died in hospital after falling in January of this year while carrying out refurbishment work at a bakery-cafe in Norwich.
Alcon Construction director Sharaz Butt, 44, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and breaches of health and safety law during a hearing at Norwich Crown Court.
Health and Safety Executive officials told the court that glass had not been fitted to the skylight, and that the opening, which was covered by a plastic sheet, had not been properly marked.
