Firms willing to pay more for 'greener' premises
It seems that energy efficiency is the top environmental consideration of commercial property occupiers reviewing future needs. The findings come from new research by the CBI and property consultants GVA Grimley.
The survey revealed that more than 75% were prepared to pay more to occupy premises that are more environmentally friendly. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of occupiers regard energy efficiency as "very important" when looking at their property needs for the next five years.
Companies also rated water-efficient buildings as having an important influence on their future choice of property.
Stuart Morley, head of research at GVA Grimley, said: "Firms attach a great significance to the resource efficiency of their property. The overwhelming majority show particular concern over the spiralling cost of heating and lighting their buildings.
"The fact that many businesses say they are prepared to pay more to occupy a greener building - though within clear limits - strongly suggests they are looking to reduce their exposure to future rises in energy and water costs."
He added that the survey also showed that firms recognised other benefits of occupying 'greener' property, such as raising staff satisfaction and improving company image.
