Online advice on electrical safety

The Health and Safety Executive has opened up a new area of its website covering electrical safety at work.

According to the HSE over 1,000 electrical accidents at work are reported to them each year and around 30 people die of their injuries.

Most deaths occur due to working near overhead power lines, contact with underground power cables during excavation work, working on or near to domestic electricity supplies or use of unsuitable electrical equipment in explosive areas such as car paint spraying booths.

The new webpages provide some "simple precautions" for those working with or near to electricity as well as a list of frequently asked questions with answers.

The HSE emphasised that as much of the new information had been summarised employers and workers "should always use the published guidance" which is listed within the information section of the new website area.
