Many a business case for health and safety

The Health & Safety Commission (HSC) today unveiled a series of case studies setting out the business case for good health and safety management.

The HSC said the case studies demonstrated both the business and social benefits of health and safety improvements in a variety of organisations, including FTSE 100 and FTSE listed companies, global businesses and public bodies.

Each study describes an initiative or programme and its benefits, in both health and safety and business terms. Examples include an £11m saving through reduced sickness absence, a 40% reduction in reportable injuries, a saving in health insurance of around £200,000 each year and a 50% reduction in civil claims.

The nineteen case studies, compiled by risk management consultants Greenstreet Berman Ltd, cover a wide range of industry sectors. Organisations highlighted include AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, the Inland Revenue, MFI, Rolls Royce and Transco.

HSC Chair Bill Callaghan said: "Managing health and safety cannot be viewed in isolation from managing the business overall. The studies highlight the vital contribution that good communications, sound training and development and meaningful worker involvement all make."

The HSE said copies of the case studies would be made available on its website in due course.
